Friend of the Foundation Friday – YWCA of Cambridge – The W

It’s Friday and that means it’s time for our #FriendOfTheFoundationFriday! We are showcasing one of the many businesses, organizations and individuals who work with the Cambridge & North Dumfries Community Foundation and the amazing work that they do in our community and with the Foundation.

This week we are featuring our friends at the YWCA of Cambridge – The W! As a member agency of YWCA Canada, YWCA Cambridge is part of a national movement known as the country’s oldest and largest women’s multi-service organization, the largest national provider of shelter, literacy, life skills, employment and counselling programs, and is the second largest provider of childcare services in Canada. For over 65 years, YWCA Cambridge has been a respected leader on issues that impact women and girls in our community. Operated through YWCA Cambridge, The W is a collective space for women and girls. This space located at 20 Dickson St in Galt is home to our Women’s Programs (Small Steps to Success) and Girls’ Programs (STEPS, SHYFT, TechGyrls, STEM Mentoring & GLOW). The W provides free, participant-led programming for women, girls and non-binary individuals while also creating spaces to engage men and boys. In addition to weekly programs, The W hosts weekend workshops, monthly movie nights, camps (March Break, Summer and PA Day) and special events.

Kate Taylor, Girls Program Coordinator/Facilitator shared with us their involvement in the community.

How is your organization involved with the Cambridge and North Dumfries Community Foundation?
YWCA Cambridge – The W has received the generous support of the Cambridge and North Dumfries Community Foundation for many years, allowing us the opportunity to provide FREE programming to girls within the community. Our holistic wellness program, GLOW (Girls’ Life of Wellness) and holistic safety program, Safe Sisters were the recipients of this funding allowing our programming to reach youth in schools and throughout the community. The Camp with the Art and The Camp with the Steam received Kids to Camp support in 2017 allowing our campers to attend week-long camps; engaging in community building activities, learning new skills, having access to delicious food and making new friends! We are proud to share our experience and the impact as shared by our youth through story sharing at CNDCF events.

What is your favorite thing about the Cambridge and North Dumfries Community?
Our favourite thing about the Cambridge and North Dumfries Community are the members of the community! Folks within this community are supportive of each other and there is a great sense of pride. We enjoy and look forward to meeting community members, supporting youth and their families, as well as making connections to other agencies and organizations that are out there doing great work to keep our community thriving!

How does the YWCA and The W hope to make an impact on the future of our community?
YWCA Cambridge – The W is working to create a safe space for everyone in the community to connect and feel welcome. We are always working to evolve our programming to best respond to the needs of the community, to support and advocate for women and youth, and to ensure that we are working toward an equal and safe community for everyone. Through our programming, we work to encourage youth to use their voice and recognize their power to create positive change within their community!

We are proud of to support the wonderful that the YWCA of Cambridge- The W are doing in our community!
